barakah gardens:
In Arabic, barakah means “blessing.” It also connotes how blessings grow and continue to increase within and through a particular place, whether it be our souls, our homes, our communities, etc. Over time, our family has come to understand and experience the garden in our Central New Jersey backyard—situated on the land of the indigenous Lenni-Lenape people—as a continual and bountiful source of blessings, which we have named Barakah Gardens. Since we began planting and growing here in 2018, the garden has grown and evolved into a space of connection, education, and community building. This modest 0.25 acre space includes a geodesic greenhouse, herb mound, a 15’ x 6’ x 3’ raised hugelkultur bed, a water catchment and irrigation system, and prayer/meditation circle. We invite you to visit Barakah Gardens when you are in the neighborhood. We are currently in the process of constructing a food forest, solar sun shower, and an enclosed yurt meeting space. In Spring 2021, we will be offering seed starts, compost tea, and other products for sale from the garden. We will also host community and educational events throughout the planting season.
